Lawyers; when you need one it's no joke.
Heard any good lawyer jokes lately? There are probably as many jokes about lawyers as there are lawyers. However, the truth of the matter is that law is a very serious business and there are times when you may have no choice but to retain an attorney in order to protect your financial interests. There is a limit to legal self-help. There are times when attorneys need to hire attorneys since no attorney can be an expert in every area of a law and it may be, although not always, true that he [or she] who has himself [or herself] for an attorney has a fool for a client. With respect to investments and financial services, a lawyer can help you recover investment losses when you have been cheated or defrauded, plan your estate, handle tax matters, or do any of a number of other things to insure that your assets are protected. As is true in any other profession, there are good attorneys and there are bad attorneys. If you are not comfortable with an attorney, don't retain him [or her] or, if you have already retained him, find another lawyer. When you hire an attorney, make sure he [or she] understands exactly what it is you want him to do for you. Above all, be truthful and tell your attorney all of the facts. That's what the attorney-client privilege is for. Before you hire an attorney, you should also understand the nature of the arrangement between yourself and your attorney and how much you are going to be charged. Whether your contract calls for a flat or contingent fee or hourly rate make sure you understand the terms and costs.
